Food Scraps, Military Canvas and PET Bottles
For their production, Virón have created a system that reuses the leftovers of other manufacturers and gives them a new life. All the soles are made of recycled rubber and they mainly use recycled canvas for the uppers, linings and insoles. To do this, they work with several warehouses in Europe from which they source surplus military materials. All dyes are eco-friendly and vegan, and some are made from food waste or flowers.
What looks like leather at Virón are various substitutes like food manufacturing scraps or recycled PET bottles. They especially like to work with apple leather, which is made from food waste from the apple juice industry in northern Italy with 60% bio-based ingredients. During the manufacturing process, the peels and seeds are processed with a mixture of polyurethane, which is then used to create a lightweight, breathable and resistant material. This technique allows fossil oil to be replaced with bio-based alternatives. Leather substitutes made from corn husks also replace fossil oil-based plastics with bio-based compounds. Similar to apple leather, the biomass content is 60%. Another leather substitute at Viron is made from recycled PET bottles. Up to 13 recycled PET bottles are used in the 1992 model line. All adhesives and dyes used are controlled by the REACH regulation of the European Union.
Virón - A European Production
The production and supply chain takes place entirely in Europe. The shoes are made in Guimarães, Portugal, in a family-run factory that specializes in the production of vegetarian shoes. The shoes are stored here and shipped from there as well. This avoids additional CO2 emissions.
